Apple Buys “Search Engine For Apps” Chomp
Apple on Thursday confirmed with All Things D that it has acquired San Francisco-based “Search Engine For Apps” called Chomp. Although details of the deal aren’t clear, Bloomberg reports that Apple has paid about $50 million for Chomp.
Chomp app’s description in App Store reads:
Chomp is the search engine that finds the apps you want.
Chomp’s proprietary algorithm learns the functions and topics of apps, so you can search based on what apps do, not just what they’re called. Try searching for “puzzle games”, “kids games”, “expense trackers”, “tip calculators” or “chat” and start finding great apps.
9to5mac notes that Chomp’s team has already started working at Apple with Chomp’s CEO Ben Keighran working at iTunes marketing team and CTO Cathy Edwards is now a senior iTunes engineer. The Chomp acquisition was first reported by TechCrunch.
